A Landmark Sustainable Development Integrating Academic, Teaching, and Sports Facilities in Central London
London School of Economics

The Marshall Building
The Marshall Building, designed by Grafton Architects, is a pivotal addition to the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) campus. Situated at the southern corner of Lincoln’s Inn Fields, the project involved demolishing an existing structure to construct the Paul Marshall Institute for Philanthropy and Social Entrepreneurship. This state-of-the-art facility houses academic departments, teaching spaces, and sports amenities, designed to enhance collaboration and promote LSE's status as a leading research institution.
The building's distinctive architecture, with its plain finished concrete and precast concrete façade, reflects LSE's commitment to environmental sustainability. The project has earned the prestigious "New London Architecture" Award in Education and achieved a BREEAM Excellent rating, with aspirations for an Outstanding classification.
Key challenges included navigating the logistical complexities of constructing on a live university campus in central London, managing Party Wall issues with neighbouring Grade II listed buildings, and adapting to planning constraints. Additionally, the project had to address overinflated tenders and existing mains service adaptations.
The Marshall Building represents a major investment in LSE’s future, providing world-class facilities while overcoming the complexities of construction in a densely populated, historically sensitive area.
