Strategic Transformation of High-Containment Facilities for Enhanced Research Capabilities
The project comprised the conversion of the existing ISO10 large animal facility to provide a stand-alone avian research facility consisting of 10 animal rooms capable of delivering science up to in enclosed primary SAPO2, ACDP2 and GM containment and up to SAPO4, ACDP3 and GM4 in floor pens or Isolators.
This conversion required careful planning to ensure physical separation from the adjacent ISO11 building, which remained operational under SAPO4 conditions during the refurbishment.

The project included the decommissioning and removal of a joint Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP), which was replaced with a containerised ETP exclusively for the ISO11 facility. Additionally, the existing CMR pressure control system was adapted, and significant modifications were made to the Trend Building Management System (BMS) to align with the new operational requirements.
The project faced tight deadlines necessitating fast-track design and procurement. Extensive stakeholder engagement was crucial to meet stringent regulatory and scientific standards while ensuring minimal disruption to the adjacent high-containment operations.
Delivering this high-containment refurbishment within a live research environment required a highly skilled team adept in design, procurement, and commissioning, ensuring compliance with Home Office regulations and maintaining operational continuity throughout the project.
