Creating a State-of-the-Art Environment for Flexible, Collaborative Science Teaching
The New Science Building at Bedford Modern School was developed to replace facilities dating from 1974 that no longer supported modern approaches to teaching and learning. The project created a contemporary home for the School’s science faculty, reinforcing its strong academic reputation and providing an inspiring environment for the delivery of GCSE and A-Level science education.
The 2,669m² building was designed as a flexible, multidisciplinary teaching facility, enabling laboratories to support a range of scientific subjects and learning formats. Adaptable layouts accommodate practical experiments, group work, digital learning and teacher-led instruction, while informal and collaborative spaces encourage discussion, creativity and spontaneous interaction between pupils and staff.

Our role included project management, programme and planning oversight, risk management, client advisory services and contract administration. We chaired progress meetings, maintained the project risk register and coordinated the client, consultant and contractor teams throughout design and delivery.
The project was delivered within a live school environment, requiring careful management of safeguarding, access, logistics, noise and disruption. Through robust programme control, stakeholder coordination and value-led decision-making, the project remained focused on delivering a high-specification facility within the available budget. The completed building provides a modern showcase for science teaching and a flexible educational asset capable of supporting evolving curricula and teaching methods.
