Delivering Resilient, Efficient Stadium Infrastructure to Protect Event Continuity
The MEU Infrastructure project formed a major part of the Twickenham Stadium Upgrade Programme, delivering a comprehensive renewal of mechanical, electrical and utility infrastructure across the stadium. The project was developed to replace ageing systems, improve operational resilience and provide reliable, maintainable building services capable of supporting the venue for the next 25 years.

The works included new high-voltage distribution, switchrooms and standby generators to protect televised events from grid failure; centralised boilers and air-cooled chillers serving new heating and cooling distribution; and resilient domestic water storage, boosting and ring-main systems. The infrastructure also supported under-pitch heating and irrigation, hot-water supplies to general-admission toilet facilities, and future improvements across the West, North and East Stands.

Our role encompassed project management and contract administration, coordinating the design, procurement and construction of the works within a live, internationally significant stadium. Delivery required close management of interfaces with existing plant, operational teams, hospitality areas, concessions, communications rooms and parallel refurbishment projects. Shutdowns, isolations and intrusive works were carefully planned around the RFU’s fixed match and events calendar to maintain safety, event continuity and uninterrupted stadium operations.

The project successfully created a more resilient and efficient services backbone for the stadium. Through rigorous change control, programme management, stakeholder coordination and technical interface management, the works reduced maintenance risk, improved energy and water efficiency, strengthened electrical resilience and established the infrastructure needed to support future redevelopment and a consistently high-quality visitor experience.
