The London School of Economics (LSE) has embarked on a transformative project to construct a new 12,500m² university building in a conservation area. Tasked with retaining approximately 60% of the existing structure, the project, led by David Chipperfield Architects, aims to establish the school’s first net-zero carbon building while promoting environmental sustainability, health, and energy efficiency. The new facility will house key departments, including Mathematics, Statistics, and Data Science, along with the Firoz Lalji Global Hub.

As LSE continues its campus redevelopment program, the project team, including 3PM and G&T, is exploring strategies to minimise embodied carbon while enhancing efficiency. Two primary options have emerged: retaining parts of the existing core structure or demolishing down to street level, preserving basement areas where feasible. The design team is focused on achieving BREEAM Outstanding, WELL Gold, and EnerPHit certifications.

We have established ourselves as a trusted advisor throughout the early project phases, conducting thorough option appraisals that incorporate sustainability objectives. Our insights shaped the project brief, confirming the feasibility of a retained structure, which has now become a cornerstone of the redevelopment strategy. This collaborative approach has not only clarified the development's financial viability but also reinforced LSE's commitment to innovative and sustainable architecture.
