Kettle’s Yard Art Gallery
The redevelopment of Kettle’s Yard Art Gallery in Cambridge represented a significant advancement in enhancing visitor experience and educational offerings. Securing funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) and Arts Council England (ACE), the project created a new Education Wing, along with environmentally controlled galleries and improved accessibility for visitors.
Led by architect Jamie Fobert, the complex refurbishment involved a careful approach to the site’s conservation status. The design retained the existing façade while addressing the challenges posed by a deep basement in a tightly constrained urban environment. This delicate balance required close collaboration with archive teams to ensure that the project met stringent environmental control parameters essential for preserving artworks.
The redevelopment reflects a holistic vision, integrating modern educational facilities with the gallery's historic character. By prioritising accessibility and visitor engagement, Kettle’s Yard is set to become a more inviting space for the public, promoting education and appreciation of contemporary art. This project not only enhances the gallery’s physical infrastructure but also strengthens its role as a vital cultural hub in Cambridge, fostering a deeper connection between the community and the arts.
