Creating Resilient, Energy-Efficient Computing Infrastructure for AI-Enabled Chemistry
The project involves converting a constrained basement storage area within the University of Cambridge Department of Chemistry into a specialist server room supporting AI, machine learning and computational chemistry. The scheme accommodates 18 server racks within a compact, controlled-access environment, alongside upgraded electrical infrastructure and an external plant deck within the existing moat.
The facility incorporates energy-efficient adiabatic cooling in an N+1 configuration, with enhanced measures to address the Department’s Legionella risk requirements. The technical design includes upgraded switchgear, fire-rated compartmentation and doors, suppression and detection provisions, acoustic controls, specialist service interfaces, maintenance access and commissioning requirements.
3pm provided project management and contract administration from design and procurement through construction, commissioning and handover. Working within a live academic and research building, the team coordinates University Estates, Department stakeholders, designers, technical advisers and contractors, maintaining control of programme, risk, technical assurance and operational interfaces while protecting the continuity of sensitive research activities.
