Strategic redevelopment and sustainability planning for the historic Lambeth Palace
Church Commissioners
Lambeth Palace
Redevelopment Masterplan
We were appointed by the Church Commissioners to provide project management for the redevelopment of Lambeth Palace, a Grade I listed site that serves as the Archbishop of Canterbury's residence and a key part of the Church Commissioners’ estate. Tasked with developing the masterplan through RIBA Stages 0 and 1, we helped define site-specific objectives that balanced the Church’s corporate drivers with planning and heritage constraints. The redevelopment plan includes extensive upgrades to the heating and electrical infrastructure, asbestos removal, and improved accessibility, all within a heritage-sensitive context.
Given the complexity of governance and tenancy arrangements, we established a clear gateway process for phased development. To maintain consistency and accountability, we employed standard project tools and methodologies, including our ‘Portfolio Optimiser.’ This tool was crucial in aligning project goals with sustainability and accessibility objectives while staying within the allocated budget. By identifying key project drivers and prioritising them, the team ensured that the redevelopment not only met the Church’s vision and values but also maximised long-term benefits.
Through careful planning and strategic alignment, our approach is facilitating a successful transition and helping to create a sustainable future for Lambeth Palace.
