Bedford Modern School
New Science Facility
The vision
Bedford Modern School is part of the Harpurs Trust Board of Schools. It is a private school with a reputation for one of the best Science grades or GCSE’s and A-Levels in the country. The facilities were opened in 1974 and beyond relatively minor cosmetic alterations they have not been updated – they are tired and no longer fit for purpose. Recent developments and innovations in the teaching and in student learning have meant that a greater degree of flexibility is required in the classroom and teachers need to be able to use different strategies, activities and resources in lessons; facilities must allow for group work and / or use of ICT with flexible and less restrictive layouts.
The School wants to grasp a more progressive and multi-focused approach that is central to good teaching and learning in the 21st century with sufficient spaces for the number of classes and students. Teachers must be able to deliver combined science courses in multidiscipline laboratories.
The design intent is to create a new Science block for the School that is a state of the art facility which will be a show case for excellence in Science Teaching. The new faculty must follow a design principle which produces a modern, flexible design which stimulates spontaneous working, encourages creativity and promotes discussion. All of the above must be delivered within a cost efficient, value for money design.
